Should troops on peacekeeping missions abroad be allowed to carry weapons for protection?

Swiss vote 477.00 (10 June 2001) concerned whether Swiss peacekeeping troops deployed abroad should be allowed to carry weapons for self-defense and to protect their mission. Previously, Swiss soldiers on peace missions were generally unarmed. The proposal was approved by a very narrow margin

Arguments for:

Armed deployments could weaken Switzerland's tradition of neutrality. Carrying weapons could increase the risk of Swiss soldiers becoming involved in fighting. Switzerland should focus on non-military peace efforts.
